I’ve been thinking more about taking a sabbatical lately. I’m kinda burned out doing what I’m doing day in and day out, and I feel as if I’m falling farther and farther behind in my knowledge and skills. So many things seem interesting, though, it’s difficult to focus long enough on any one thing to come up with a “killer” sabbatical project. Current areas of interest include:

  • Something that allows/involves international travel (I’m limited by the fact that I only speak English) or living in Washington, D.C. for a limited time
  • Something that would allow me to get some technical skills or at least see how some of the really cool stuff that’s happening with information delivery on the web works (I’m particularly interested in dynamic web sites, digital repositories/archives, and podcasting)
  • Something that would allow me to work with a team of other dedicated, skilled, and fun/exciting people and actually produce something tangible in 3-6 months.

I don’t necessarily need all three of these things in one project; a project that satisfies only one of them would be acceptable. I did some trolling at ALA Midwinter in Seattle and came up with some interesting ideas, so maybe I’ll follow up on some of those. Everything just seems to take so much time and effort, which is the whole reason I want to take a sabbatical in the first place. I feel like I haven’t got the time or energy to do my job well anymore … Sigh.
