I got started with a new project this week, using the yarn I bought at the Ram & Rose last Thursday. Because I started it while watching a video of the Pirates of Penzance (specifically while listening to Kevin Kline’s rendition of “I am a Pirate King”), this bag pattern will always be inextricably linked with that song. Now, every time I sit down to work on it, the song starts going through my head. Sigh. At least it’s a good/fun/happy song!
I’m now about half done with the bag itself. The pattern is easier than I initially thought, but I have learned several new skills by working on this project. 1. working with a marker 2. a “slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front” stitch 3. how to do a yarn over at the beginning of a row and 4. knitting into the back side of a stitch, which, when combined with the slip 1 purlwise stitch, makes a very nice edge. The yarn is just about perfect for the bag. It has been easy to work with and the gauge is just about right on the mark. It’s taking a bit more yarn than predicted by the pattern, but two balls (about 280 yards) should be plenty, since it took less than one ball to do one side. Either the person who wrote the pattern casts on differently than I do, or the pattern has a pretty serious error at the beginning, putting the “tail” on the wrong side of the bag to finish as instructed; but I’m playing with the pattern on the second side to get that worked out. If I have time to work on it this weekend like I did last weekend, I should be able to get it mostly done by next Thursday.
